What is Copyright Knowledge Licencing?
When knowledge based services and products such as training programmes or development toolkits are created by an individual or organisation, they are automatically the copyright property of the originator.
Copyright material is one form of what is known as intellectual property.
Intellectual
property is an asset which can be bought and sold in the same way as any other form of asset, like an office building or a vehicle.
One way of using a copyright knowledge asset to develop a new income stream is to licence it to others to use, for a fee. A licence gives others permission to use your copyright licence, with your approval, and on terms you agree with them.
Organisations of all types can licence their copyright knowledge -
- Voluntary and community groups
- Social enterprises
- Charities
- and many others
The first step
is to use the KAR - Knowledge Asset Review diagnostic tool to help you identify where your organisation may have knowledge based assets, which may not be currently being used to their full potential.
